Established in 1979, Karnataka Janapada Parishath is dedicated to identifying, preserving, and promoting Karnataka’s folk literature, arts, and artists. It aims to revive ancient art forms endangered by modernization and provide them with a platform in contemporary society.

Mission At the heart of Karnataka Janapada Parishath is the revival and respectful preservation of Karnataka’s endangered folk cultures. Its mission is to safeguard and present folk heritage through research, documentation, archiving, exhibitions, and publications.

Expanding the Vision The Trust’s objectives include:

Founder Chairman- Sri H.L. Nage Gowda: (From 1979 to 2005)

H. L. Nage Gowda, the visionary founder of Karnataka Janapada Parishath and Janapada Loka, left an indelible mark on the preservation and promotion of Karnataka's rich folk heritage. With the establishment of this institution, he embarked on a mission to ensure that the vibrant tapestry of rural and tribal culture and folk arts would continue to thrive and inspire generations to come. Born with a deep appreciation for the cultural diversity of Karnataka, Nage Gowda's dedication led to the founding of Karnataka Janapada Parishath in 1979. This institution became a beacon for the preservation of folklore, conducting research, archiving traditional art forms, and organizing engaging events that celebrated the essence of the state's cultural roots. In 1994, Nage Gowda's vision expanded further with the establishment of Janapada Loka, often referred to as the 'Folklore World' or 'Folk-Culture World.' This cultural center emerged as a testament to his commitment, providing a dedicated space for the captivating village folk arts of Karnataka to be displayed and appreciated by all. Janapada Loka became a hub of learning and celebration, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the captivating stories, vibrant performances, and intricate crafts that encapsulated the soul of Karnataka's rural communities. H. L. G. Narayana: A Pioneer of Folk Arts (2005-2011)

Narayana played a key role in Karnataka’s folk arts, organizing district-level festivals and publishing Karnataka Janapada Kalegalu, a landmark book on folk arts. His tenure also focused on visual documentation of these traditions.

Shri T. Timme Gowda: Champion of Rural Culture (2011-2022)

A retired IAS officer, Shri Timme Gowda strengthened Karnataka Janapada Parishath by expanding programs envisioned by H.L. Nage Gowda. He established Nadoja H.L. Nage Gowda Kala Shale and a research center, along with art installations at Janapada Loka, enriching its cultural landscape.

Prof. Hi. Shi. Ramachandre Gowda: A Scholar of Folk Traditions (2022-2024)

Prof. Hi. Chi. Boralingaiah: Torchbearer of Tradition and Scholarship (from 2024)

Prof. Hi. Chi. Boralingaiah, born in 1955 in Hittalapura, Tumakuru district, is a distinguished academic and cultural leader, currently serving as Chairman of Karnataka Janapada Parishath. A gold medalist in Kannada from Bangalore University, he earned his Ph.D. under Dr. Chandrashekhar Kambar at Kannada University, Hampi.He has held esteemed positions, including Visiting Professor at the University of Würzburg, Germany, and represented India at International Puppet Festivals in Europe and Tehran. His influence extends through advisory roles in language policy and educational institutions, including chairing the Kannada Language Teaching Implementation Committee.An acclaimed writer and folklorist, Prof. Boralingaiah has authored over 20 research works on folklore, tribal culture, and literature. Notable works include Ujjani Choudamma, Dasappa-Jogappa, Siddayira Culture, Karnataka Janapada Art Dictionary, and Manteswami Mahakavya. His creative contributions like Girijana Naadige Payana, Anekadu, and Kuppali Diary have gained academic recognition, forming part of university syllabi. He has been honored with the Bharoda Language Research Academy Award and the Dr. Shivaram Karanth Janapada Award.

As Chairman of Karnataka Janapada Parishath, Prof. Boralingaiah has been instrumental in establishing Girijana Loka and advancing the preservation and promotion of Karnataka’s folk arts. His leadership continues to inspire a deeper appreciation for the rich traditions of Karnataka’s folk culture.

Current Managing Trustee

Shri Aditya Manjaraj: A Visionary Leader at Karnataka Janapada Parishath (from 2018)

Shri Aditya Nanjaraj, Managing Trustee of Karnataka Janapada Parishath, upholds a rich legacy as the grandson of H. L. Nage Gowda and son of H. N. Nanjaraj. He assumed office in 2018 after the untimely demise of Smt. Indira Balakrishna, bringing determination and purpose to his role. With a Master’s in Engineering Management from the U.S., Shri Aditya gained global experience working in an MNC before returning to India to establish his own enterprise. His professional journey honed his leadership, strategic vision, and ability to tackle complex challenges.

As Managing Trustee, he has modernized and streamlined the Parishath’s operations, applying his expertise in IT, engineering, civil, and financial management to enhance efficiency and transparency. His initiatives have strengthened the administrative foundation, enabling the Parishath to better fulfill its mission of preserving Karnataka’s folk traditions. Under his leadership, the Parishath has embraced a blend of tradition and modernity, infusing renewed energy into its activities. Shri Aditya’s commitment to his family’s cultural legacy, coupled with his progressive approach, ensures that the Karnataka Janapada Parishath continues to be a vital institution for cultural preservation and development. His efforts position the Parishath as a beacon of Karnataka’s folk heritage for generations to come.
