Janapada Kosha: Shri H.L. Nagégowda’s Legacy

One of Shri H.L. Nagégowda’s greatest contributions was his role as chief editor of Janapada Kosha (Folk Dictionary). This monumental work preserves the linguistic richness of Karnataka’s rural traditions by documenting folk vocabulary, idioms, and proverbs.

Nagégowda, deeply committed to oral traditions, recognized the threat of modernization to rural dialects. Under his leadership, the Janapada Kosha meticulously recorded thousands of words, ensuring their authenticity and cultural significance.

More than a dictionary, it became a living archive of Karnataka’s folk heritage. Today, it remains an invaluable resource for scholars and folklorists, preserving the essence of folk language and traditions.

Books and Publication

Book and Publications by the Karnataka Janapada Parishath focus on a wide array of folk traditions, from songs and stories to visual arts. They release books, journals, and newsletters that delve into various folk forms, offering both academic and practical insights into the state’s cultural diversity. One notable publication is Janapada Jagattu, a journal that highlights different folk art forms, local rituals, and community practices.

Through these publications, the Karnataka Janapada Parishath ensures the preservation of traditional knowledge, fostering awareness among the younger generation and promoting Karnataka’s rich cultural legacy. These efforts help maintain the relevance of folk art in the modern world while ensuring that it continues to be valued and celebrated.

Sirigandha: Bringing Folk Culture to Television

Under Shri H.L. Nagégowda’s leadership, the Karnataka Janapada Parishath pioneered audio-video documentation to preserve folk traditions. Notably, the Sirigandha serial on Doordarshan became a landmark initiative in showcasing Karnataka’s folk culture.

This serial brought rural stories, folk songs, and customs into urban households, bridging the gap between traditional and modern audiences. Through captivating storytelling, it highlighted folk music, dance, and rituals, making them accessible to a wider audience. Additionally, Sirigandha emphasized the role of women in rural life, portraying their strength, resilience, and traditions, further enriching Karnataka’s folk narrative.

Sobane Chikkamma Studio

Another pivotal project in the audio-video documentation efforts of the Karnataka Janapada Parishath was the creation of the Sobane Chikkamma Studio. The studio was established as a space for recording and documenting folk performances, rituals, and songs that are intrinsic to Karnataka’s cultural heritage. The name “Sobane Chikkamma” is itself a reference to a popular folk character, symbolizing the deep connection between the studio’s work and the folk traditions of the state.

The Sobane Chikkamma Studio became a crucial resource for the documentation of folk performances. It provided a professional setting for recording songs, stories, and rituals that were otherwise at risk of being forgotten. The studio was equipped with modern audio-video recording equipment, allowing the Parishath to capture folk performances with clarity and authenticity. Over the years, many folk artists and performers were given a platform in this studio, where they could showcase their talents and contribute to the preservation of Karnataka’s folk traditions.

Audio-Video Documentation Projects

Beyond Sirigandha and Sobane Chikkamma Studio, the Karnataka Janapada Parishath has actively documented folk music, rituals, dance, and oral storytelling to preserve Karnataka’s cultural diversity.

These efforts serve multiple purposes:

  • Safeguarding endangered traditions threatened by urbanization.
  • Providing a platform for folk artists to gain recognition.
  • Supporting academic research on Karnataka’s folk culture.

By leveraging modern technology, the Parishath has ensured that Karnataka’s rich folk heritage is not only preserved but also celebrated, keeping it relevant for future generations.
